Venice, Italy known for its stunning canals, historic architecture, and romantic atmosphere, it's no wonder that millions of tourists visit this city every year.
Venice is a city that floats on water and connected by many bridges. I only had one whole day to walk the city and discover its gems. Travel books often say that one literally get lost in the city. That’s absolutely true. When I was there, it was difficult to navigate through the city by map because oftentimes the street change names from one block to another. Don’t let that scare you because you can use San Marco Square/Saint Mark’s Basilica as a reference point. There are signs everywhere that points to that landmark.
While I was there, my husband and I explored the colorful alleyways, the small squares, and the stunning views of the waters. The gondolas are such iconic symbols of the city and so much larger than I imagined. We didn’t get the pleasure of riding on one through the waters of Venice, but that was our choice. It’s quite pricey for a 40 minute ride and goes up even more when riding in the evening time. I honestly don’t think it’s worth it, but everyone has to make that determination for themselves.
A must-see in Venice is St. Mark's Basilica. This stunning church is located in St. Mark's Square, which is the heart of the city. The interior of the church is filled with intricate mosaics, marble columns, and stunning artwork. While there may be a line to get in, it's well worth the wait.
Next, visit the Doge's Palace. This historic palace was once the seat of power for the Venetian Republic, and it's now a museum that's open to the public. You'll be able to explore the palace's ornate chambers and see works of art by some of Italy's most famous artists. If you're a fan of art, be sure to visit the Gallerie dell'Accademia. This museum houses one of the largest collections of Venetian art in the world, including works by Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese. The museum is located on the Grand Canal, so you'll also get a great view of the water as you explore the galleries.
Finally, don't miss out on trying some of the local cuisine. Venice is known for its seafood, so be sure to try some of the fresh fish and shellfish that are caught in the surrounding waters. You'll also want to try some of the local wines, such as the famous Prosecco.
While Venice can be crowded with tourists, it's still a city that's well worth visiting. From its historic landmarks to its delicious cuisine, there's something for everyone in this stunning city. So start planning your trip to Venice today, and get ready to fall in love with one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
